DETECTIVE DIVISION

Case Investigation

A detective’s primary function is the investigation of complaints of crimes reported to the Sheriff’s Office. This involves gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects, and developing leads. The Detectives must then determine if a case has sufficient evidence for prosecution. They will issue warrants and prepare for testimony and the presentation of evidence in trial process.

Criminal Investigations

All complaints made to the Sheriff’s Office result in the assigned deputy compiling and submitting a report. These reports may involve assault, personal injury, or death, larceny of property or damage to property or other crimes set forth in North Carolina General Statutes. The detectives review each one of these reports and determine which cases should be closed and which cases require further investigation. They analyze each case as to the offense committed, evidence available, geographic location and other factors. Although each detective is well trained in all areas and able to conduct any investigation, the complex nature of criminal law is now requiring more specialization.

Interaction and Coordination with Other Law Enforcement Agencies.

Detectives regularly exchange crime investigation information with other area Police Departments and Sheriff’s Offices. We compare ongoing investigations looking for trends and similarities in our respective jurisdictions.
